A good news for anyone who loves debate!

The Brunei Warwick Society are hosting a Debate Competition for Brunei Societies throughout the United Kingdom (Click here to see more updates from the organiser, BruWick Student Society).

Apparently, we need more people to form our own debate team. Therefore, any interested individuals can contact Jalyn Goh as soon as possible as the preliminary rounds are just around the corner. The following are more details on the event:

Anyone up for shooting games?

In conjunction with our 28th National Day, the annual Brumingham Student society has invited everyone to their BBSS Paintball Tournament! (Click here to see more updates from the organiser, BruMingham Student Society)

Same as previous years, BDSSW is going to send their own team which is popularly known as BruWelsh Guards. Therefore, this year we need more names so that we can have a complete paintball team of 15 people. Any interested individuals can contact Messoni Jaini. Assalamualaikum semua,

Sebagai usaha untuk mendapatkan keputusan cemerlang dalam peperiksaan yang akan datang ini, BDSSW telah mengadakan Solat Hajat berjemaah untuk perempuan di 61 Llanishen (rumah presiden) dan diikuti dengan tadarrus.

Di bawah adalah beberapa doa untuk diamalkan semasa menghadapi peperiksaan.

Doa agar dikurniakan kefahaman yang baik dan ingatan yang sempurna sewaktu mengulangkaji.

(Allahummar zuqna, Ya Rabbi fahaman nabiyyiin, wa hifzaal mursaliin,
wa 'ilhaamal malaikatiil muqarrabbin, fii 'aafiyaati, ya Arhamar raahimiin)

Maksudnya: "Wahai Tuhanku, kurniakanlah kami fahaman nabi-nabi dan hafalan para rasul serta mendapat ilham dari para malaikat yang hampir denganMu, juga kurniakanlah kami kesihatan Wahai Tuhan Yang Amat Pengasih"

We are set for Salam Brunei mood!

First of all, Happy New Year everyone!

In conjunction to that, we have changed our blog theme to suit our Salam Brunei mood! Just to remind again, we have four months left before this big event. Therefore, let's get into the mood for it.

Now our blog theme is more traditional Brunei and blend with some Wales aspect such as flag colour theme and the Welsh translation on some parts of the blog. Stay tune because there will be more and more updates posted in this blog! First teaser poster!

And to all BDSSW members, please note that we will be having our first meeting regarding this Annual Event on this Saturday, 21st January 2012. It will be in Cardiff Metropolitan University Llandaff. Be sure to come. For more information, click here.

Hi everyone,

Here is basically the summary of everything from the last friendly match with Bruston which took place on the 26th November 2011 at the Talybont Court. There were three sport for this event; netball, futsal and badminton. The photographs will describe how it went.

Hari Raya Aidil Adha

Salam and hi again everyone!

First of all, selamat Hari Raya Aidil Adha to all Muslims everywhere. Alhamdulilah, BDSSW celebrated Hari Raya Aidil Adha yesterday which took place in Llandaff Campus, UWIC. The event itself was a huge success, with over 50 people attending the event and not forgetting people from Glamorgan had come all the way to Cardiff!

Before the event started, we had our Zuhur prayer as the event took place during midday. The event started with recitation of doa by our religious officer, Aminnudin Deli, and was then followed by a short speech by our president, Mahirah Ismail. The event was brought to a close with the consumption of "lush" food. Many thanks for those who had contributed to the event!

Annual General Meeting 2011

The Annual General Meeting is our yearly event to welcome the new members of BDSSW. It is our first event for this new academic year.

This year, almost 80 members attended the event and they were coming all over from Swansea and Glamorgan. This is indeed one of the biggest annual not to be missed especially for the freshies because this is the time when you all can get to know each other in Wales.

We were in 'Program 3-in-1 Study in UK'!

Bruneian students are encouraged to embark on further studies in the United Kingdom (UK) every year, attributable to its great reputation across the world; the qualifications offered by its universities will greatly cater to huge pluses in the working environment locally and internationally.

Being a first-rate place to obtain advanced degrees and masters, UK universities come with a broad range of courses and programmes, enabling undergraduate students to sample different cultures and approaches that will help them improve in key areas.

Brunei Darussalam carries out a scholarship scheme that sends its youth to universities globally each year, and Bruneian students stand a chance to study in one of the top 50 universities in the UK with the help of the Government His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Ministry of Education.

During the 'Program 3-in-1 Study in UK', which was held yesterday at the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, a majority of Bruneian undergraduates who were invited to speak to the younger students shared a similar opinion about studying in the UK.

"Cardiff is a vibrant city, and so is everywhere else in the United Kingdom," said Mahirah Ismail who is studying second year Physiotherapy. "The cost of living here is relatively affordable, and the Cardiff University is a great centre for healthcare studies for those who are interested," she added.

Dayangku Siti Azriah, Wali and Muiz, who are currently studying at the Loughborough University, were proud to call it 'a home away from home'. Undertaking Sports Management, Systems Engineering and Chemical Engineering respectively, they informed that the Loughborough University is inclusive with upgraded facilities for various courses, predominantly in the science subjects.

"Keele is the best option for those who wish to pursue Geology & Environmental Science," said Farhan Hassan. "Being one of the few universities that offer dual-degree, Keele also possesses a friendly, quiet and peaceful living environment, apart from the many Bruneians who are residing in close communities." He and his colleagues, Mohd Yaakup (International Relations) and Nazihah (Physiotherapy), are also members of the BruKeele Society.

Syahadah (BA in Marketing) and Rafidah (BA in English Language) have also settled in very well at the Bangor University. As mentioned by the other undergraduates, they agreed that the UK has a lot to offer than elsewhere across the world.

UK has become a venue for these students to strive for excellence, develop critical thinking skills, boost interests whilst at the same time interacting with international students and specialising in exclusive researches at the highest level."

BRULEEDS Mini Tournament (BMT)

BRULEEDS mini Tournament was held in the Sports Centre, University of Leeds on the 30th October 2010. It brought together players from different Brunei student societies in UK. The event started with an opening speech by our director of studies, Cikgu Abdullah bin Haji Ahad.

After the all the matches, Cardiff Devils A won the BMT plate. While the Cardiff Devils B came out as runner-up of BMT cup. Most important of all, congratulations to both Cardiff Angels and Cardiff Devils for the great games!

AGM 2010/2011

Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held yesterday at Cyncoed Campus, UWIC where the seniors and juniors get to know each other for the whole afternoon. The event started with a brief presentation by BDSSW's President, Isa Sukarni and BDSSW's PRO, Adibah Shahrani.

After the presentation, new committees of BDSSW 10/11 was announced by the President. Congratulations to all of the new committees! :-

Bruneian students in Wales come together to celebrate Aidilfitri

Brunei Darussalam Student Society, Wales (BDSSW) recently organised a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration for Bruneian students residing in Wales, United Kingdom.

The event was held in Cardiff but other students from all over Wales such as Glamorgan, Swansea and Bangor were also invited to attend the ceremony. The event was aimed at fostering closer relations amongst all Bruneian students residing in Wales, especially the freshies who just arrived this year from Brunei.

Present at the ceremony were President of BDSSW Muhammad Isa Denis and Vice President Nurayuni Atikah Hj Marzuki, as well as other members of the BDSSW committee.

The BDSSW executive committee will be organising an annual general meeting soon which will include an ice breaking activity especially for the freshies.

British High Commission to launch 'Digital Scrapbook for Brunei Students in UK'

The British High Commissioner, Rob Fenn has launched a project, entitled "Digital scrapbook for Bruneian students in the UK." The project was launched when he hosted the breaking of the fast orSungkai for about twenty Chevening scholars and students who have been to or are studying in the UK.

The project is to let Bruneian students share their experiences living in the UK. The format could be either on a video, audio or images which will be compiled in a page in the 'UK in Brunei' website. Assisted with the help of Muhammad Reeda Haji Abdul Malik, the project will run from six to nine months. Those who are interested to join can contact the High Commission at: brithc@brunet.bn or via the High Commission's Facebook fan page at: www.facebook.com/ukinbrunei. Assalamualaikum,

Sesi mengkhatamkn alquran tahun 2010 akan dieruskan setiap hari jumaat, pukul 7.00 malam, bertempat di surau Brunei hall. Pelajar-pelajar yang amat berminat adalah digalakkan mengikuti sesi ini.

Pelajar-pelajar luar London yang sukar mengikuti sesi minguaan ini bolehlah menghabiskan bacaan mereka secara sendirian di tempat belajar masing-masing. Disamping itu, pelajar-pelajar hendaklah memberi nama penuh mereka samada kepada:

Rasid (religious.secretary [at] bsunion.org) atau
Ustaz Haji Raminey (ro [at] upp.org.uk) dengan segera.

Majlis Khatam Alquran akan diadakan pada 14 March 2010 bersamaan dengan 27 Rabiulawal 1431.
Untuk meriahkan lagi suasana Majlis Khatam Alquran ini, perserta perempuan bolehlah memakai Baju Kurong dan tudong berwarna hijau atau kurang lebih sama seperti hijau sebagai pakaian seragam. Pakaian bagi perserta lelaki adalah Baju cara Melayu (warna apa saja), Songkok dan Blazer.

- Tahniah bagi mereka yang dikurniakan biasiswa. Awda adalah tergolong di dalam golongan yang bertuah kerana dapat menikmati cabaran dan hidup sebagai pelajar di rantau.

- Persaingan di alam pekerjaan semakin kuat/ketat di mana kuantiti/kualiti pembelajaran semakin baik dan membanggakan. – Disebabkan oleh sikap Anak Brunei yang ‘inda mau kalah’.

- Diharapkan semoga awda pulang nanti dengan segulung ijazah sebagai bukti kerajaan menghantar awda adalah tidak sia-sia dan bukan satu kesilapan.

o Awda dikehendaki menunaikan janji (Bond) yang telah dipersetujui bersama sebelum pelajar melangkahkan kaki ke UK.

o Ini adalah harapan kerajaan dan juga rakyat Brunei agar pelajar-pelajar pulang dan berbakti kepada mereka.”

Q1: Saya merupakan anak cacat pendengaran dan saya juga adalah ‘Pivate student’. Kecacatan saya menyusahkan saya untuk mengikuti pengajian. Apakah pandangan Dato mengenai ini?

A: Anda memerlukan keperluan khas. Untuk memohon bantuan sebagai pelajar yang berkeperluan khas, buatlah satu permohonan dan hadapkan kepada UPP untuk dihadapkan ke hadapan SUT atau berjumpa terus dengan Pengarah Pengajian (Cikgu Abdullah). Lampirkan bersama keperluan (disabled facilities) yang diperlukan.

Q2: Pekerjaan apakah yang sangat-sangat diperlukan di Brunei pada ketika ini memandangkan saya mengikuti jurusan ‘Computing’.

A: ‘Computing’ merupakan aspek penting dalam sistem pendidikan. Ianya memperluaskan aktiviti di dalam pelbagai bidang. Dari segi pekerjaan, ianya diperlukan sebagai ‘tenaga’ iaitu mengajar. Oleh itu janganlah ia dipandang ringan.

ITB masih kekurangan dan memerlukan ‘Networking Engineering’. Ini adalah berkaitan dengan Computing. Sistem teknologi merupakan kekuatan E-Govt Project. Pada masa ini Brunei sedang mengusahakan pelbagai E-Govt project yang banyak berkerjasama dengan Semi-Government dan Private Sector. Oleh itu jangan hanya memandang pekerjaan di dalam kerajaan. Jika anda telah ‘di-bonded’ / diikat-janji’, maka anda adalah sangat diperlukan untuk pulang ke tanah air.

Brunei masih memerlukan pakar dari segenap bidang terutama dalam bidang teknologi dan kejuruteraan. Sistem pendidikan telah diubah menjadi ‘Sistem 21 – Sains dan Teknologi’. Ini bermaksud penggunaan komputer adalah sangat penting. Peluang pekerjaan juga banyak tetapi adalah sangat diperlukan untuk anda menamatkan pengajian hingga ke peringkat PHD. Jangan ketinggalan dan teruskan pengajian awda untuk memperluaskan lagi peluang pekerjaan. Dan apabila kerajaan menghantar anda, ini bermakna kursus yang anda ikuti adalah sangat diperlukan.”

Q3. Saya merupakan pelajar PHD yang menuntut di London. Akan tetapi saya tidak dibenarkan tinggal di Brunei Hall. Taraf hidup di London adalah sangat tinggi iaitu House Rent sahaja dalam – £500+ sebulan exclusive (tanpa bill). Apakah rancangan pihak UPP terhadap elaun kami memandangkan elaun kami benar-benar tidak mencukupi.

A: Bahagian Biasiswa sedang berusaha untuk mengumpul maklumat bukan sahaja di UK tetapi juga bagi pelajar yang belajar di Brunei, Australia dan lain-lain. Sememangnya memang ada dalam perancangan dan kami akan berusaha untuk membantu..

Pihak UPP sedang membuat survey mengenai dengan kewangan pelajar-pelajar. Sila ambil maklum dengan aktiviti-aktiviti yang dianjurkan oleh bahagian UPP agar kami dapat membuat rumusan mengenai dengan perbelanjaan yang kamu tanggung.

Q4. Saya sedang mengikuti jurusan Chemical Engineering in Master (4 tahun). Kami ingin tahu dimanakah kami berdiri. Adakah kami dikira sebagai pelajar postgraduate atau undergraduate?

A: Sebelum mengikuti apa jua jurusan adalah diingatkan untuk mendapatkan kursus pengiktirafan (Accreditation) dari Unit Pengiktirafan Brunei. Mengenai dengan soalan yang diajukan, kami akan mengajukan proses ini kepada kerajaan dan aku memaklumkan kemudian. Sentiasa mengambil tahu tentang apa jua berita yang disampaikan melalui website UPP.

Q5. Adakah pihak Biasiswa membenarkan penuntut untuk mengambil jurusan Degree 4 Tahun (3 tahun kursus + 1 Industrial Training)?

A: Jika ‘Industrial training’ itu wajib dibuat dan bukan ‘optional’ maka ia dibenarkan dengan syarat, University tersebut adalah top 50 dan telah pun diiktiraf oleh Unit Pengiktirafan Brunei. Para pelajar juga hendaklah memohon ‘Certificate of Accredition’ sebelum membuat apa-apa jua kursus sama ada pelajar biasiswa atau ‘private students’.

Q6: Bolehkah saya mengambil Master in Teaching walaupun saya mempunyai Degree di dalam bidang yang lain?

A: ‘Master of Teaching’ memerlukan mereka yang benar-benar ingin menjadi pendidik. Qualification mestilah ‘Degree’ or higher. Adalah dibenarkan untuk membuat Master in Teaching tetapi, adalah digalakkan untuk mengambil Master di dalam bidang yang kamu ikuti terlebih dahulu.

Q7. Adakah MOE memberikan apa-apa ‘placement’ di dalam kerajaan sebagai latihan kepada penutut sebelum memasuki alam pekerjaan?

A: Borang permohonan ‘Placement’ di dalam kerajaan sudah lama disediakan. Boleh didapati di website UPP. Ianya adalah latihan untuk pelajar agar lebih tahu apa yang diinginkan di dalam sektor kerajaan. Biasanya tidak bergaji tetapi pengalaman yang penting.

Q8. Bagi Private Student Tahun 3 yang ingin memohon Scholarship untuk Tahun 2 (bidang yang sama), adakah ia dibenarkan?

A: Penerimaan bagi penutut yang dianugerahkan Scholarship adalah bergantung kepada keputusan serta syarat-syarat yang sudah ditetapkan oleh pihak kerajaan, Jika hendak memohon Scholarship untuk Tahun 2, pihak MOE, hanya akan melihat keputusan dari 1^st year dan bukannya dari Tahun 2 atau Tahun 3.

Keputusan hendaklah SEKURANG-KURANGNYA 2:1.

Perlu diingatkan, permohonan Scholarship semakin tinggi. Ini bermaksud persaingan adalah sangat ketat. Para pelajar adalah digalakkan untuk berusaha dengan lebih giat.

Paper Blooms Project

Paper Blooms is a project based highly on the participation of the audience as each person is required to contribute a paper flower. The paper flowers would then be gathered into one piece of art work, each one of them being different with the rest as it resembles one’s “individuality”. A project being carried out by a student in Bradford the BDSSW Cardiff girls decided to come together and have a creative afternoon to contribute to the project.

On the 16^th January 2010 His Excellency Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Timbalan Menteri Pendidikan had a meet and greet session with the students in the United Kingdom. The event took place at Brunei Hall for most part of the morning. It was very productive where students had the chance to ask questions which were directly answered by His Excellency himself or other officers from the Ministry of Education.

BDSSW sent out 2 representative to this event; Azimah Zaili and Hafizah Mohammad who directed questions to the panel on behalf of other students. For further information on the questions asked and the answers which followed them keep your eye on this blog for an update on them later.

We are going to have an Islamic event : Majlis Ilmu this February, held on the 13th February 2010 (Saturday) at the Julian Hodge Lecture Theatre, Colum Road, Cardiff University, CF10 3EU. The talk will be given by Ustaz Haji Raminey bin Haji Salleh, Religious Officer, from the Brunei Student Unit.

BDSSW is calling Bruneian students in Wales (Cardiff, Glamorgan, Swansea, Bangor..) to come and join this event. Since this event will be organized by BDSSW, it is expected that most of the guests attending will be students from Brunei.

Just to inform that, donation (in terms of money) would be very much appreciated for this event. Donation will be collected starting on the 27th of January 2010 (wednesday). Paper Blooms Project

Salam everyone,

Hope everyone is having a lovely winter break and is in good health in this crazy unpredictable weather. I would like to inform you guys about a project that I was introduced to by a friend. The project is called Paper Blooms Project and being carried out by a student studying in Bradford University.

She is calling out on anyone and everyone to help her carry out this project and send in flowers to her so that she can assemble them into one big display at her university. She needs 300 more flowers by 30th January 2010. I spoke to her and volunteered BDSSW to be involved in the project. She was thrilled and sent this message:-

"There's no specific instructions as to how you could do it. It's actually based on a person's creativity, so go WILD with it :D I only ask that it is made out of paper (you could also use recycled materials such as magazines/paper bags). If you require some tutorials, I've posted the links in the websitehttp://paperbloomsproject.blogspot.com/2009/11/tutorials.html .

There's no limitation on how many paper flowers submitted per person. Though, I do need the names of people who have contributed so that I could credit them.

As a reminder for fellow Muslims in Wales.

The 10th of Muharram // Hari Asyura in the Muslim calendar is just around the corner. It is one of the significant days in the Muslim calender where many amazing events involving the prophets, for example, it is the day when Allah gives His blessings, Allah created the Arasy, and the day God pardoned Adam a.s. after years of repent for disobeying God

On this day, Muslims would fast voluntarily during this day to show respect and remember the many history behind the day. Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was said to fast during Asyura as it was the norm among Arabs in Makkah. When he migrated to Madinah, he found that the Jews also fast during the day. The tenth of Muharram for them is called Yom Kippur which also means ten.

Mu’awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan (Radiyallahu 'anh) relates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) say: "It is the day of ‘Ashura. Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) has not made fasting obligatory for you. But I am fasting. He who likes to observe fast among you should do so, and he who likes not to observe it (does not have to) observe it." [Sahih Muslim]

2009, 10th Muharram falls on the 27th December. we are encouraged to puasa sunat asyura on this day.

it is advisable to puasa for 2 days after 10th muharram, to membezakan puasa orang Islam and puasa orang yahudi.

27th (9th muharram), 28th (10th Muharram) and 29th (11th Muharram).

Transportation to London for Winter Games

The transportation for winter games will be a day trip departing Cardiff at 4.45am to arrive promptly at 8am in London. We will depart back from London back to Cardiff at 6.30pm.

Meeting point is Cardiff University Student Union, Park Place and you will be dropped off at Westway sports centre in London where the games will take place.

The cost per head will be £13 for BDSSW registered members and £15 for non-registered members.
(We will not accept registration on this day. Please do so before the event to receive the exclusive discounts. Or after to receive discounts for events after that.)

Please RSVP to this event to ensure a seat is reserved for you as there is a 48 seat limit and priority is given to team members. Also please invite non-BDSSW members as appropriate who wish to join our bus so we can do an exact head count.

Winter Wonderland outing

The BDSSW members were out for a night of fun sliding and gliding on the BMI baby skating ring at the Cardiff Winter Wonderland fair. They also rode the John Lewis Ferris wheel which is as tall as 3 double decker busses. Overall the night was a fun night out away from the stress of assignments, placements and revisions.

Assalamua'laikum,
Just some words of reminder...

Rasulullah S.A.W once said,

" Tiada hari yang Allah banyak membebaskan hambanya selain dari hari Arafah"
(hadith riwayat Muslim)

"There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Hell Fire than the Day of Arafah. And on the day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of exhibiting His pride remarks to the Angels, "What is the desire of these (servants of mine)."
(Sahih Muslim)

The 9th of zulihijjah will be the day of Arafah. So, boys and girls, we are encoraged to fast on this day, (for those who are not performing Haj) - tomorrow 26th November 2009, Thursday. Why?

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:

“Fasting the Day of ‘Arafah expiates for two years, one prior and one forthcoming.”

[Reported by Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah]

Starting tomorrow, after performing Fajr, Zuhur, Asar, Maghrib and Isyak Prayer, we are also encouraged to bertakbir, until the 13th zulhijjah (after performing Asar prayer).

Lastly, an announcement.

All Bruneian students are invited to Cathays Community Centre on Friday (27th November 2009), at 9:00 AM (9:15 AM solat starts) for solat hari raya Haji.

Cardiff Winter Wonderland outing

From the polls it has been decided that the Cardiff Winter Wonderland outing would be on the 28th November 2009.

For those who wish to skate please be at the skating tent 30 mins before your session. Tickets for Ice skating are £8.50 per session.

The sessions are at:

7.00pm - 8.00pm

8.20pm - 9.20pm

9.40pm - 10.40pm

Also the John Lewis wheel which stands three double decker buses tall, the wheel boasts 24 heated, waterproof, enclosed gondolas that can accommodate up to 6 passengers on a 10 minute flight. From the top of the wheel passengers will be able to spot sights like Cardiff Castle, the Millennium Stadium and the new John Lewis. Tickets are £4 per person and last ride is at 10.45pm.

Other information: Bjorn the Polar Bear will be in Cardiff on the 6th, 13th and 27th December and 3rd January. Bjorn is abeautiful, animated, life size polar bear who roams around the rink with Ursula his Inuit helper. Ursula tells all about Bjorn's lifestyle and rapidly disappearing habitat whilst Bjorn likes to be stroked and pose for pictures with children. Come and see for FREE at 1,3 & 5 pm.

More than 20 BDSSW members in Cardiff were gathering for a get together event on the 5th November 2009. The event was held at Holywood Bowl Red Dragon Centre, Cardiff Bay.
